uniform news

Massachusetts Police go Black, Chelsea Police go Blue
Two different police departments have arrived at very different uniform colors. The Massachusetts department has selected black to instill more fear and convey stronger authority. Meanwhile, the Chelsea, Michigan, force is switching to blue Class B style uniforms to save money and soften its look.

Uniform Color Becomes a Brand in Itself
Say "Brown" and two things come to mind: the color and the parcel carrier. That's exactly how UPS wants it, and it's cashing in on the Kentucky Derby winner "Big Brown," the horse named after UPS's trucks and uniforms.

helpful tips
Run "If/Then" Scenarios with your Staff
One of the simplest and most helpful ongoing training tools you can use with your staff are If/Then scenarios. Simply by describing a situation and asking what your security officers would do, you are helping them plan ahead. Officers learn to consider different possibilities and potential outcomes.

Such possible situations could be, "If you are driving through the parking lot and see someone trying to pick the lock of a car, then what would you do first?" You can talk through whether to approach the situation as if the car's owner locked his keys in the car or as if the car is being broken into by a criminal. Such If/Then scenarios help keep officers sharp, identify potential problems, quicken response time, and make sure officers follow protocol and don't overreact.

Unitex Direct Attends NASCO Hill Day Summit in Washington, DC

I attended NASCO's Summit and Hill Day (www.nasco.org) earlier this month and was honored with the task of introducing New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez to the NASCO community.

In attendance was a who's who of major security guard companies across the USA. I met with chief executives and top management of these companies and discussed how Unitex Direct could help their bottom line. Companies I met with included:

American Security Programs, Inc.
Allied Barton
Colt Security
EODT
Guardsmark
Securitas Security Services USA, Inc.
Security Forces Inc.
Special Response Corporation
Tri-County Security
U.S. Security Associates, Inc.
The Wackenhut Corporation
WSA Security, Inc.

I had the opportunity to present Unitex Direct to these executives and here is what I consider the most important aspects of this business:

"I started Unitex Direct more than 15 years ago, and today our company operates out of a 20,000-square-foot building housing our product warehouse, operations and customer service work. There are just four brief points that I would like to make this morning.

One, to be price competitive we manufacture our own shirts, pants, and outerwear to the best industry standards and we can create custom uniform programs for you.

Two, we execute to the highest standards in customer service and on-time delivery. Better, I believe, than companies that are ten times our size.

Three, I have made clear to our staff through our mission statement that we ‘must at all times act in the best interest of our valued customers.'

And four, what our customers say about Unitex Direct is more important than what I say about my company. So, I would encourage you to seek out your colleagues who are using our services and ask them directly if we make the grade."

I also met with officials from Homeland Security in the Emergency Services Sector, the Division Director, Security & Regulatory Services, Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Criminal Justice Services (VA DCJS) and met with the staff from Congressman Thaddeus McCotter's office who represents the district in which Unitex Direct is headquartered. I discussed with the Congressman's staff some of the issues we face with importing from overseas and selling to the TSA.

Thanks again to all of you who met with me at the NASCO Summit!

President,

CEOs Weigh In on Security

Security Magazine has an excellent article this month revealing the results of a survey of 100 CEOs and how they interpret, influence and perceive their company's security. The CEOs scored elements of traditional security highly both in their importance and in realization of security planning. Other areas of security didn't score as highly. According to the article, "Execution is taking precedence over profit and top-line growth as a focus for CEOs around the world," and integrated physical and technological security is a growing demand of security firms. Among other interesting findings, the article reports that "physical security professionals are ahead of information security professionals in their efforts to become cross-trained for work in the integrated security environment."

Celayix SoftwareCelayix Software

While attending the NASCO Summit, Unitex Direct learned about an exciting new software offering and we wanted to share the info with all of our customers.

Security companies are faced with the dual challenge of controlling expenses and getting the most out of the resources they have on hand. Celayix has been providing solutions tailored to the commercial security market since 2000. Customers say that the software has helped them lower their overtime costs by up to 60% and at the same time reduce the time their managers spend scheduling by up to 75%.

But that is only part of the story. Running a business today means being able to make decisions based on good information. Using eTime Xpress, users are able to get reports that enable them to make clear business decisions on whether existing contracts are profitable and to develop new bids based on that historical information. It's a tool that lets you understand the past, and to predict and plan for the future.

Celayix also offers Web Xpress and Voice Xpress for employee communication. Voice Xpress is particularly well suited to the smaller security company or branch office. Utilized as a remote time clock, it can record who, where, and when a call was made. Those times and the appropriate billing rates are automatically recorded in eTime's Time and Attendance module. From there, they can be exported to virtually any payroll and billing program thereby eliminating costly and error-prone manual methods.

For security companies who have to manage large numbers of employees for special events, Celayix has developed an exciting new technology that virtually lets employees schedule themselves. Customers using Celayix's new self-scheduling module have seen dramatic reductions in the time it takes to schedule and manage one-off events.
